Join artist Tiona Nekkia McClodden with her Padrino (Godfather) Johnny, of the Oba Iroko Church of God for a conversation on artistic and spiritual practice, on the occasion of the exhibition, Juan Francisco Elso: Por América. Like Elso, McClodden is a practitioner of Santería (Regla Lucumí), which has often informed her conceptual frameworks and her approach to her artistic production.
With her Padrino, she will discuss the challenges and possibilities of integrating spiritual and ritual-based practices into her work, addressing such concepts as spiritual “correctness,” Iwa Pele, audience and community, ritual, and Diaspora. McClodden will also share her insight on Elso’s art, as well as her newly commissioned artworks, Absolute Congruence and In a Sense (2022), which are in honor of her Orisha Ogun and are currently on view at El Museo del Barrio.
