b. 1995, Mao Valverde, Dominican Republic; lives and works in New York, NY

Drawing on familial scenes and the culture of his native Dominican Republic, the figurative paintings of Raelis Vasquez invoke the complexity of the Afro-Latinx experience and often ask viewers to question their positions on class, race, and immigration. The works address Blackness and racial identity through the lens of immigration in the United States. Most of Vasquez’s paintings capture the inner character of the painted subjects while displaying emotive narratives. Reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s Hotel Lobby (1943), the painting The Other Side of Tourism, focuses on the hotel clerk as the central figure. Surrounded by white patrons and another worker, this female figure, lost in her thoughts, appears isolated and tired, a subtle critique on contemporary society, the consumption of the “Other” and the immigrant experience.
