ektor garcia is a multidisciplinary artist whose material-based practice pushes against the limits and artistic hierarchies associated with sculpture, craft, installation, and painting. Experimentation is central to his artistic process, as he juxtaposes seemingly incongruous textures, materials, and forms using leather, metal, fiber, ceramic, and found objects. His objects are at once both recognizable and ambiguous, suggesting bodily references and a sense of a queer embrace of the multi positional and unfixed. Many works bare poetically open-ended titles, inviting the viewer’s interpretation and engagement. Referencing the city where he was born, portal, Red Bluff is part of a series of woven metal hanging structures whose door or screen-like format suggests a liminal space. Other works are suggestive of New York, where the artist lived and still spends time (the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick echoes in fleisch und stahl (portal Gdlbushwiqué), for instance). Similarly, his most recent piece of crocheted Mariposas (Butterflies), executed in Mexico, perhaps references these creature’s migratory paths, in a reference to the artist’s own self-proclaimed nomadic way of life.

ektor garcia es un artista multidisciplinar cuya práctica y uso de materiales van en contra de los límites y las jerarquías artísticas asociadas a la escultura, la artesanía, la instalación y la pintura. La experimentación es fundamental en su proceso artístico, pues yuxtapone texturas, materiales y formas aparentemente incongruentes utilizando cuero, metal, fibra, cerámica y objetos encontrados. Sus objetos son a la vez reconocibles y ambiguos, al sugerir referencias corporales y un sentido queer que abarca lo multiposicional y lo no fijo. Muchos de ellos llevan títulos poéticamente abiertos que invitan a la interpretación y instigan al espectador. Haciendo referencia a la ciudad en la que nació, portal: Red Bluffforma parte de una serie de estructuras metálicas colgantes cuyo formato de puerta o pantalla sugieren un espacio liminal. Otras obras sugieren la ciudad de Nueva York, donde el artista vivió y sigue pasando tiempo (el barrio de Bushwick, en Brooklyn, resuena en fleisch und stahl (portal Gdlbushwiqué), por ejemplo). Del mismo modo, su pieza más reciente de Mariposas tejidas, ejecutada en México, hace referencia a las trayectorias migratorias de estas criaturas, en alusión al propio modo de vida nómada del artista.
