El Museo del Barrio in collaboration with Higuayagua Taino luku Kairi and the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) invite you to a fun-filled family day in celebration of Taino art and culture!
Activities across the museum will be led by Higuayagua Taino luku Kairi, a tribal group/ organization dedicated to research and the dissemination of Caribbean indigenous cultures. The group will share engaging activities throughout the day with a focus on language, dance, material culture, spirituality, and storytelling.
This day of community and celebration will culminate with an exciting afternoon of programming, featuring a video performance by artist, educator, and activist Irka Mateo; a dance presentation by Higuayagua and a concert presented by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance Ensemble (ALJE), an octet made up of some of the most virtuosic musicians in jazz today featuring artists with Taíno roots who will explore questions of indigenous identity and history.
Art making activities and gallery tours of the exhibition Something Beautiful: Reframing La Colección will be led by El Museo’s educators throughout the day.
All ages welcome.
