Join us for our birthday celebration featuring the opening of Culture and the People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019, Part II: Historic Timeline, a display tracing the historical and cultural trajectory of the institution since 1969. The celebration continues with live performances by Aurora Flores and Zon del Barrio, Palladium Mambo All Stars, and DJ Bembona. Visitors can also travel back in time and take part in a birthday photo booth, inspired by the late 1960s, in partnership with Nuevayorkinos.

CULTURE AND THE PEOPLE: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019

In celebration of our 50th anniversary, Culture and the People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019 reflects on the institution’s activist origins and role as a cultural and educational organization dedicated to Puerto Rican, Latinx and Latin American art and culture. The two-part exhibition features selections from the Permanent Collection, and an institutional timeline, including rare archival materials. Both parts are on view through September 29. En el marco de la celebración de nuestro 50 aniversario la exhibición dividida en dos partes, Culture and the People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019, refleja los orígenes activistas de la institución y el rol como una organización cultural y educacional dedicada al arte y la cultura Puertorriqueña, Latina, y Latinoamericana. La exhibición destaca una

ABOUT AURORA & ZON DEL BARRIO: MUSIC FROM THE STREETS OF LATIN N.Y.
Bringing dance style classic Afro-Boricua music from the barrios, Aurora & Zon del Barrio bring its foot stomping, funk based classic salsa, plena, merengue, bomba & boogaloo to the corners of the Barrios where Latinos live, work and play. Creative, musically diverse in taste while resourceful in survival, Latinos from the barrio zones have sophisticated tastes in music that is not relegated to one particular genre. Zon del Barrio emerges as one of the few orchestras to express the varied genres of Latin music from the African Diaspora and the urban streets of New York. This group of veteran and young musicians is led by music journalist & historian, Aurora Flores with musical direction provided by David Fernandez, a multi-instrumentalist who defers to his almost encyclopedic knowledge of the classics for his creative arrangements. With original tunes penned by Flores, Zon del Barrio introduces the dynamic young vocals of Hector “Papote” Jimenez, an up and coming sonero of the 21st Century who channels the spiritual voicings and phrases of the great Latino singers such as Benny More Ismael Rivera and Hector LaVoe. Presentando música tipicamente Afro-Boricua, Aurora Flores & Zon del Barrio, pisan fuerte también en materia de ritmos propios del funk, plena, merengue, bomba y boogaloo, en cada rincón de El Barrio, donde los Latinos viven, trabajan y juegan. Los Latinos de El Barrio son creatives, musicalmente diversos e ingeniosos en materia de supervivencia, pero con un gusto musical sofisticado que no está relegada a un solo género en particular. Zon del Barrio surge como una de las pocas orquestas que expresan los diversos géneros de la música Latina, desde la Diáspora Africana, a las calles de Nueva York. ABOUT EAST HARLEM CULTURE COLLECTIVE
The East Harlem Culture Collective (EHCC) is a group of local artists, neighbors, cultural institutions and community-based organizations located in East Harlem. In pursuit of the Arts & Culture vision of the 2016 East Harlem Neighborhood Plan, and with modest seed money from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, our mission is to support and preserve East Harlem’s historic cultural identity as a community of immigrants, workers, artists, and activists. We believe this is always important but especially today as we are experiencing gentrification and social change. Through a social media platform, an interactive neighborhood map, a monthly publication, and a temporary cultural exchange gallery, the volunteer artists, neighbors, cultural institutions and community based organizations of the EHHC aim to foster a social ecosystem in which local artists and cultural institutions can flourish, new audiences can be reached and the local economy can be stimulated. East Harlem Culture Collective (EHCC) es un grupo de artistas locales, vecinos, instituciones culturales y organizaciones comunitarias ubicadas en East Harlem. Palladium Mambo All Stars are keeping the Palladium era alive. With the music of Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Machito and the legendary music from Puerto Rico. This band was created on 2015 with great All Star musicians that played with all the Latin Legends musicians such as Johnny Rodriguez, Jose Madera and more. This band has performed in various locations such as Lincoln Center doing a tribute to Celia Cruz, Bryant Park, Copacabana, Taíno Towers, and the festivals for the Puerto Rican parades as well as the Brooklyn Salsa congress. This 10-piece band will surely Make You Dance. Palladium Mambo All Stars mantiene viva la era Palladium. Con la música de Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Machito y la música legendaria de Puerto Rico. Esta banda fue creada en 2015 con excelentes músicos de la categoría de [Fania] All Star que tocaron con todos los músicos de Latin Legends como Johnny Rodriguez, Jose Madera y más.
