Join El Museo del Barrio for a powerful conversation featuring outgoing Latiné leaders from the New York City Council as they transition out of office this year. This timely dialogue will honor their service and recognize their lasting contributions throughout their time in office. During the conversation, they will share key insights from their tenures and engage in a forward-looking conversation about the future of Latiné communities in New York City. 

The featured speakers are: 

  • Diana Ayala (Deputy Speaker and Council Member, District 8 – East Harlem & South Bronx)
  • Rafael Salamanca Jr. (Council Member, District 17 – South Bronx)

Juan Manuel Benítez, award-winning journalist and host of the new podcast Juan Manuel Benítez Wants to Know, will moderate the discussion.  


This panel is co-organized by El Museo del Barrio and MirRam Group.

 

This event is co-presented by El Museo del Barrio, Latinx Arts Consortium of New York (LxNY), and Hispanic Federation.

 

Bios  

Diana Ayala is the Deputy Speaker of NYC Council, representing District 8, which encompasses East Harlem and the South Bronx). Born in Puerto Rico, she migrated to New York with her family as a child. She is a passionate advocate on issues including housing, homelessness, mental health, education, substance abuse prevention, gun violence, and senior services.  

Rafael Salamanca Jr. represents District 17 (South Bronx) and serves as Chair of the Land Use Committee. The son of first-generation Puerto Rican immigrants, he has been a champion of affordable housing and job creation during his time on the Council. 

Juan Manuel Benítez is Columbia University’s professor of Local Journalism. He spent two decades as a political reporter and anchor at NY1, hosting the public-affairs show Pura Política. He just launched a new video podcast titled Juan Manuel Benítez Wants to Know.
