The Culture of Community: A Latinx Photo Symposium

Thursday, May 9, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

FREE

MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in collaboration with El Museo Del Barrio, invites the public to the final Scheimpflug Lecture Series of the Spring 2019 semester with The Culture of Community: A Latinx Photo Symposium on May 9th, 2019 at 6:30PM.

In conclusion of our 30 Year Anniversary programming, MFA Photo/Video offers a discussion lead by current thesis candidates Jordan Cruz (2019)and Carla Maldonado (2019) with special guests Veronica Sanchis Bencomo (Photographer, Foto Feminas), Perla de Leon (Photographer) and Susanna Temkin (Curator, El Museo Del Barrio).

The Culture of Community: a Latinx Photo Symposium exemplifies a community effort, in content as well as execution. Over the past year and a half, through political, social, and natural disasters, Jordan Cruz (Bronx, NY) and Carla Maldonado (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) have not only incorporated identity and advocacy in the concepts driving their work, but continuously strive to educate themselves and our academic community on a demographic of under-recognized and unparalleled Latinx cultural producers. With Susanna Temkin, Perla de Leon, and Veronica Sanchis Bencomo, this symposium aims to discuss issues surrounding representation in academic and cultural institutions, as well as a look towards the future with the reclamation and modernization of the photo archive on social media and web-based platforms.

The Culture of Community: a Latinx Photo Symposium could not be possible without the generous support of ADORAMA and GramArt, as well as the collaborative efforts of Charles Traub, Michael Chovan-Dalton, Liz Zito, Jordan Cruz, Carla Carvalho, Susanna V. Temkin and El Museo del Barrio.
