Familias, join us for a celebration of Carnival a lo Caribeño! Drawing from the African cultural influences present in the regional festivities, author, storyteller, anthropologist Dr. Raquel Ortiz will share with us the story of “Sofi and the Magic Musical Mural”, followed by a vejigante workshop with Maria Dominguez, illustrator of the book, and artist of the mural located in the South Bronx which inspired the book. Dominguez will introduce the tradition of the vejigante, a mischievous folkloric character, and its role in Puerto Rican carnival celebrations. Following the workshop, participants will receive a link to a puppet show inspired by the book, which can also be found at elmuseo.org for a limited time. Recommended for children 5 and up and their adult caregivers. A list of materials will be provided prior to the workshop.
