OVER THE TABLE: Artist Portfolio Reviews
April 15, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pmFREE, RSVP
CALLING ALL ARTISTS! El Museo del Barrio’s Curatorial team is inviting artists of Puerto Rican, Latin@, Latin American, or Caribbean descent to register for a twenty-minute portfolio review. This season, OVER THE TABLE, a part of the Office Hours project, offers art practitioners in different stages of their development the opportunity to engage in one-on-one discussions about their work or an upcoming project. These informal exchanges seeks to turn the traditional artist-curator portfolio review into an act of camaraderie between individuals working in the same field.
This portfolio review features Cuban Art critic and Curator Meyken Barreto, of Y Gallery on the Lower East Side.
Barreto has been professor at Havana University and San Geronimo College in Havana. She has lectured in Internacional education Institutions such as Universidad Complutense in Madrid and, Martin Luther University, Halle (Saale). Awarded with the national curatorship award in 2009 in Cuba for the anthological show: Tanda Corrida. Cuban audiovisual exhibitions 2005-2008 (co-curated with Mailyn Machado), her researches focus on video and contemporary art from Cuba. She has recently curated the video program for the exhibition Cuban America: An Empire State on Mind held at Lehman College, NY, 2014; and co-curated (with Elvis Fuentes) the group exhibition Flow: Economies of the look and creativity in contemporary art from the Caribbean at IDB Cultural Center, Washington DC, 2014. ABOUT OFFICE HOURS (OH)
OH is comprised of a series of actions spread throughout El Museo del Barrio’s facilities for which multi-disciplinary artist Nicolas Dumit Estévez invites the various departments of El Museo to operate at a horizontal level with its own exhibition space. OH conceives El Museo and the museum as a holistic work of art; that is, a living artwork existing beyond the boundaries of the exhibition space and co-mingling with life.
