50th Anniversary Celebration
El Museo del Barrio is a complex, culturally specific institution that over its 50 year trajectory has changed location, has expanded its mission and scope, and has witnessed the nourishing of multiple generations of Puerto Rican, Latinx, and Latin American artists and cultural leaders. Over its evolving history, the Museumhas reected and responded to both the local New York as well as wider nationaland international artistic, social, and political contexts. A center of cultural pride,El Museo del Barrio also serves as a platform that explores our individual and collective identities, embraces our cultural roots, and arms the importance of representation.
Through the presentation of an institutional timeline, this second, complementary section of Culture and the People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019, attempts to nuance this history by tracing notable moments, programs and exhibitions that have taken place at the museum. Expanding on previous research, the presentation is supplemented by archival photographs, correspondence, artworks, invitations, and other ephemera to bring the timeline to life.
We acknowledge that this timeline represents just a partial view of the people and events that have shaped the institution’s history, and intend this presentation to be a step in making the rich history and documentation of El Museo del Barrio more accessible to the public.
This section of the exhibition is dedicated to the staff, volunteers, artists, and community members who continue to fundamentally shape El Museo del Barrio’s past, present, and future.
