Taíno Legacy aims to bring a contemporary perspective to the exhibition by examining the persistence of Taíno culture in the contemporary Caribbean and its diaspora.
An exhibition (September 27, 1997 - January 11, 1998) of archival and contemporary photographs and videotapes documents the life ways and world views of members of the growing self-identified Taíno communities. A selection of videotapes and photographs by José Barreiro, Domingo Batista, Roberto Borrero, Jorge Estevez, Héctor Méndez Caratini, Rich Brotman, Peter Ferbel, Janis Lewin, Peter Siegel, Holger Thoss, the American Museum of Natural History, National Geographic Magazine, and the National Museum of the American Indian are on view.
Public programs (October 1997 - February 1998), including live performances, lectures and symposia with scholars and Taíno activists - from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United States - focus on major issues pertaining to the persistence and revival of Taíno spiritual beliefs, forms of social organization, material culture and performance art. These programs are designed to foster a lively debate on issues pertaining to the reclamation and reinvention of an ethnic identity, both in the individual, communitarian, and national realms.
