Taíno: Pre-Columbian Art and Culture from the Caribbean is the first comprehensive exhibition of Taíno art to be presented in North America. It provides an overview of the remarkable achievements of this ancient Caribbean people. The Taíno were the dominant culture in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica and the Bahamas from about 1200 AD to the arrival of Columbus in 1492.

The Taíno Legacy, an exhibition of photographs and videotapes, explores the persistence of Taíno cultural traditions in the present-day Caribbean and its diaspora. Coaybay: Site of the Afterlife is a Contemporánea '97 installation by Jorge Crespo.

Four publications accompany the Taíno exhibition. A ground-breaking, scholarly book, a bilingual exhibition catalogue, an Educator's Resource Guide, and an Activity Book for children will be available in the Museum Shop.

Taíno: Pre-Columbian Art and Culture from the Caribbean was curated by Dr. Ricardo Alegría, Dr. José Juan Arrom, and Dr. Dicey Taylor. The Project Directors were Fatima Bercht and Estrellita Brodsky. Taino image citations can be accessed by clicking on the photographs of each work, or visitors can view the complete list of Taíno images featured on this site. El Museo del Barrio thanks Dr. Dicey Taylor for providing the text for the Taíno pages. El Museo del Barrio is also grateful to the lenders and funders for this exhibition.
