The Taino Legacy aims to bring a contemporary perspective
to the exhibition by examining the persistence of Taíno
culture in the contemporary Caribbean and its diaspora.
The Taíno Legacy I, an exhibition of archival and
contemporary photographs and video, documents the life ways
and world views of members of the growing self-identified
Taíno communities.
The Taíno Legacy II consists of public programs
including live performances, as well as lectures and
symposia with scholars and Taíno activists¬from Cuba,
the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United States¬
focusing on major issues pertaining to the persistence and revival
of Taíno spiritual beliefs, forms of social organization,
material culture and performance are. These programs are designed
to foster a lively debate on issues pertaining tot he reclamation
and reinvention of an ethnic identity, both in the individual,
communitarian and national realms.
This project compliments Taíno:
Pre-Columbian Art and Culture from the Caribbean.
