MARKETING MANAGER

Report to: Director of External Affairs
Status: Full-time, Exempt

Scope and Purpose of Job

The Marketing Manager will be responsible for communicating the museum’s programs and mission to enhance its reputation as a vital cultural resource to the public and to build its audiences.  The Marketing Manager will work with the Public Relations Manager to promote the museum’s public image and programs using different media outlets.  The Manager will also be responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies to maintain and develop new audiences for the museum’s exhibitions, public programs and special events.  The Manager will also oversee the design, production and distribution of the museum’s communications materials.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop a long-term marketing and communications strategy to increase the museum’s name recognition and reputation for outstanding arts programs with key audiences.
  • Develop bilingual institutional communication materials for the Museum’s various departments (institutional brochure, membership brochure, education and theater brochures, community and audience development materials, etc.).
  • Manage the development of content for public information vehicles such as the museum’s newsletters, annual reports, institutional brochures and web site, as well as for Destination: El Barrio materials such as the map, flyers and web site.
  • Provide oversight for annual advertising media budget. Manage the purchase and placement of advertising units in different media outlets such as: newspapers, radio, magazines and internet.
  • Oversee and coordinate designers, list brokers, printers, mail houses to produce season brochures, newsletter and other promotional materials.
  • Determine attendance goals and develop outreach strategies for new audiences, as well as provide relevant marketing information to program and senior staff.
  • Maintain all audience attendance records for exhibitions, public programs and special events. In addition, coordinate audience research survey efforts.
  • Work with the Director of External Affairs to facilitate the efforts of the Board Marketing and Earned Income Committee to promote the interests of the Museum.
  • Work with the Executive Steering Committee of the East Harlem Board of Tourism to facilitate their efforts in promoting the interests of East Harlem.

 

Qualifications

  • BA degree, preferably in Marketing, Communications or related field.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • 3+ years marketing experience, preferably in an arts and culture organization or advertising agency.
  • Many of the duties assigned to this position require working across different Museum departments; the manager therefore should have high initiative, very strong creative and strategic abilities and outstanding people skills.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, messaging, and oral communication skills to reach a variety of different audiences.
  • Computer literacy and the ability to focus on details and deadlines. Experience with new media strategies and technologies a plus.
  • Some graphic design experience and supervision of printing of materials.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and budgets.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Knowledge of art and Latin American culture preferred.
  • Familiarity with East Harlem cultural assets a plus.

VISITOR SERVICES COORDINATOR

Report to: Marketing Manager
Status: Full time, Exempt

Scope and Purpose of Job

The Visitor Services Coordinator will be responsible for the development
and implementation of policies and procedures aimed at providing customer service, facilitate visitor access and promote positive visitor experiences
at El Museo’s various facilities and programs, including but not limited to gallery admissions, fee-based and facilities usage, visitor comments and complains, visitor surveys, and the dissemination of information concerning programs, exhibits and events.  S/he will manage daily reconciliation of attendance related to gallery, group, public program and special events.
The Visitor Services Coordinator will monitor all public information, including signage, website, and other publications for accuracy and effectiveness.

The Visitor Services Coordinator will report to the Marketing Manager. S/he will also collaborate closely with the Operations staff on general Museum house-keeping, with Curatorial, Education, Theater and Public Programs staff on visitor information and programs and with co-workers in External Affairs on the Museum’s “public image” and carrying out its brand essence. The main objective of this position is to work as part of a team toward achieving the highest quality visitor experience.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement customer service procedures and policies, and staff and volunteer training programs to insure a positive visitor experience (museum-wide).
  • Ensure superior customer service by providing direction and information to all museum visitors and guests. Provide a timely resolution to visitor issues and complaints in a positive and upbeat manner.
  • Organize public information, maintain and replenish supply of all marketing materials and signs in lobby, museum shop, galleries and Café. As well as ensure all areas are clean, stocked, and prepared to receive visitors prior to opening each day.
  • Implement and enforce the Museum dress code across all Museum and Café staff who interact with the public.
  • Track admissions data and attendance records for exhibitions, public programs and special events.
  • Develop methods for, monitor, and track visitor feedback (comment cards, surveys, email messages, and verbal feedback).  Create and implement action plans to address issues and to capture opportunities identified.
  • Assist External Affairs colleagues in the design of promotional brochures and strategies and the implementation thereof to achieve expected attendance and ticketed sales.
  • Monitor the visitor aspect of the website for accuracy and consistency, and coordinate necessary corrections or additions with the Manager of Public Relations and the Webmaster and Graphics Coordinator.
  • Coordinate facility maintenance as needed with the Operations Department to ensure compliance with the Museum’s/industry regulations and policies on safety and the American Disabilities Act.
    Assist with cash handling duties regarding visitor admission and membership sales.
  • Work during all public events to assist admissions and/or public programs, and assist in managing visitor circulation throughout the building’s public spaces.
  • Work with Volunteer Manager to recruit, train and supervise Visitor Services volunteers.
  • Work on Visitor database as needed in Raisers Edge.
  • Performs any other related duties or special projects as directed.


Qualifications

  • College graduate with 2/3 years of visitor or customer service experience preferably in a museum setting.
  • Professional, self starter, with the ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills, ability to work productively with diverse constituencies, as well as the ability to anticipate and respond quickly to resolve problems.
  • Spanish/English bilingual skills required.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including all Saturdays and Sundays that include public programs as well as other weekends as deemed necessary. (Regular schedule is Tuesday – Saturday).
  • Experience with Vista and Raiser’s Edge is highly preferred.
  • Retail sales, cash register, and cash handling experience a plus.

DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

Report to: Head of Programs / Executive Director
Status: Full time, Exempt

Overall Responsibilities

The Director of Education is responsible for the development and supervision of the education department. The Director of Education must have direct contact with the constituencies served and the general public, network with peers from museum education departments, expand art education awareness in our diverse communities, and strengthen ties
with the NYC Department of Education. S/he will supervise education professionals in the department, artist educators, docents, interns,
and volunteers.  S/he will work collaboratively to expand the Education component of all the programming areas at El Museo and will work
with other departments to achieve the overall goals and objectives
of the organization.  S/he must have a vibrant personality with a record
of excellence in the field of Museum Education and at least 5 years
of managerial experience. The Director of Education must be bilingual English/Spanish and familiar working with Latino and Latin American communities.


General Responsibilities

  • Develop general education mission and philosophy for the department.
  • Responsible for the planning, management and growth of the Museum’s education programs for K-12 students and educators, including tours and workshops, school partnerships, after school programs, professional development and artist training, family and community programs, adult public programs, and outreach.
  • Participate in long-range planning for the education department as for well as overall museum goals. Participate in the elaboration of future strategic plans, their assessment and implementation.
  • Develop educational materials for varied constituencies: school groups, adults, youths, senior citizens and the general public.
  • Develop and implement evaluation processes for Education programs and the staff administering them.
  • Develop with the programming departments of El Museo the Educational resources and materials for the website
  • Establish and manage network of partners and collaborators to fulfill Education department goals. Maintain and establish educational collaborations with other cultural organizations.
  • Help identify audiences and resources for existing and pilot education programs and implement assessment measures.
  • Assist in grant writing and proposal development; identify foundation, government and corporate funding possibilities; meet with potential funders and sponsors; and prepare final reports
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets in close collaboration with the Fiscal office.
  • Serve as a liaison for all education program funders, NYC Board of Education, Universities, and other school systems.
  • Assist in planning and organizing exhibitions of work generated through education programs for spaces that may be negotiated within or outside the organization.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of education component during special events and festivals.
  • Develop and coordinate volunteer and docent programs.
  • Prepare quarterly Board of Trustees reports.
  • Convene, engage and lead the Education and Public Programs Advisory Committee– an advisory group consisting of trustees, scholars, community organization representatives, and members of the museum education community
  • Collaborate with the Curatorial Department on program planning and vetting interpretive materials
  • Develop and oversee promotion and outreach plan for Education Department programs, identify target audiences and PR priorities, develop mailings, and seek potential collaborative partners and cross-promotional opportunities


Desired Qualifications

  • Five years minimum of supervisory professional experience in Museum Education, Arts Education and/or related experience in a cultural organization.
  • Graduate degree in Arts Education, Museum Education, Education, Art History, Fine Arts, or Visual Arts Administration.
  • Knowledge of NYC cultural community and public school system or equivalent if relocating.
  • Working knowledge of Latino and Latin-American communities
  • Background in Latin American/Caribbean art
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work productively with diverse constituencies as well as government agencies and the public.
  • Spanish/English bilingual skills.
