Each guided tour is an hour long, allowing groups to discuss 4-5 objects in depth. For K-12 groups, conversations are complemented by gallery activities which may include movement, writing, or sketching, and appeal to multiple ways of learning and interpreting. All of our programs are offered in English, Spanish or both.
Guided tours and hands-on workshops align with NYS Learning Standards, NYC Blueprint for the Arts, National Visual Arts Standards and Common Core Standards.
Join El Museo del Barrio’s Museum Educators to explore what happens when a community comes together to make a museum. Through the work of El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, other contemporary artists, and East Harlem residents, we ask: what does it mean to be a museum of the neighborhood? Whose voices are included, and how can visitors shape what is displayed? Tours are available from March 22 to September 13, 2014.

PRESENCIA: Works from El Museo’s Permanent Collection
The most recent exhibition of work from El Museo’s permanent collection focuses on ideas of presence and its antithesis, absence. This theme is explored through photography, painting, prints, drawings, masks, and other objects. The exhibition investigates the visibility and invisibility of the human form through the presentation of the body in literal and conceptual ways. Works from this exhibition can be included in a guided tour upon request.
