UPTOWN BOUNCE: ROOTS
July 30, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FREE, RSVPUPTOWN BOUNCE kicks off with a cultural rewind to where it all began!
Música meets arte at El Museo! Elena Martinez from City Lore takes us through El Museo’s galleries, using works in the exhibitions as jumping off points for a conversation about the legacy of mambo and salsa in the East Harlem community (and to some point, its natural extension in the Bronx), beginning with its roots in the Caribbean, music’s role in grassroots political movements, and its presence in East Harlem–where what we call Latin jazz and mambo was born.
DJ D’Marquesina will be spinning old school hits, with video projections by artist Erika Harrsch, and sidewalk art by the Murcielagos Fumando Collective: Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez/FEEGZ173, Marie Jimenez, Andy Martinez, COZ, Sol Rebel and Lejka Sievert.
Be sure to check out the studio visit with Antonia Perez, our artist-in-residence, and design and create colorful prints inspired by artist-in-residence Antonia Perez’ stencil work with traditional Mexican patterns. Turn your prints into postcards using our ready-made template, or create your own work on paper!
At the City Museum, groove to hip hop beats by DJ Tony Touch and Latin rhythms by Chico Cruz to complement City As Canvas — the first exhibition of New York graffiti art from the Martin Wong Collection.
UPTOWN BOUNCE is the first-ever joint series between El Museo and the City Museum, featuring music, gallery talks, art-making workshops, break-dancing demos, DJs, festive summer drinks, local food vendors, and more.
