In solidarity with Puerto Rico, El Museo del Barrio presents a special Super Sábado, commemorating the resilience of the Puerto Rican community one year after Hurricane María. Join us for a fun-filled family day of art making, dance movement workshops, storytelling, a dance performance, and more! En solidaridad con Puerto Rico, El Museo del Barrio presenta un Súper Sábado especial, conmemorando la resistencia de la comunidad Puertorriqueña un año después del Huracán María. Acompáñanos para un día divertido familiar de talleres de arte, y movimiento, cuentos, un espectáculo de baile, y mas!

Down These Mean Streets: Community and Place in Urban Photography

Explore the work of ten Latino photographers—Manuel Acevedo, Oscar Castillo, Frank Espada, Anthony Hernandez, Perla de Leon, Hiram Maristany, Ruben Ochoa, John Valadez, Winston Vargas, and Camilo José Vergara—who were driven to document and reflect America’s urban streets when notions of the inner city began to emerge. Organized by E. Carmen Ramos, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM)’s deputy chief curator and curator of Latino art. Explora el trabajo de diez fotógrafos Latinos: Manuel Acevedo, Oscar Castillo, Frank Espada, Anthony Hernández, Perla de León, Hiram Maristany, Rubén Ochoa, John Valadez, Winston Vargas y Camilo José Vergara-quienes fueron impulsado a documentar y reflexionar sobre las calles urbanas de Estados Unidos cuando comenzaron a surgir las nociones del “inner city”. La exposición está organizada por E. Carmen Ramos, curadora adjunta y curadora de arte latino del Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM).

Organized by SCAD Museum of Art and curated by Humberto Moro, SCAD Curator of Exhibitions, Liliana Porter: Other Situations is a non-linear survey of Porter’s work from 1973 to 2018, which explores the conflicting boundaries between reality and fiction, and the ways in which images are circulated and consumed. Organizada por SCAD Museum of Art y curada por Humberto Moro, Curador de Exposiciones de SCAD, la exposición es una encuesta no lineal del trabajo de Porter de 1973 a 2018, que explora los límites conflictivos entre la realidad y la ficción, y las formas en que las imágenes circulan y se consumen.

Picking Up the Pieces: An intimate view of life post-María

Picking Up the Pieces is an intimate look at life post-Hurricane María in Puerto Rico, and the unfortunate “new normal” of its people. Comprised of drawings, installations, and photographs that reflect unforgettable moments experienced by artist Adrián Viajero Román’s travels throughout the island, the installation creates portraits of individual lives profoundly touched by trauma and tragedy, and resilience. Picking Up the Pieces es una mirada intima a la vida en Puerto Rico después del paso de Huracán Maria, y la desafortunada nueva vida de su gente. Compuesto de dibujos, instalaciones, y fotografías que reflejan los inolvidable momentos vividos por el artista Adrian Viajero Roman durante sus viajes a la isla, la instalación crea retratos de la vidas individuales profundamente afectada por trauma, tragedia, y resistencia.

COLORÍN COLORADO with Kiki Kokí: The Enchanted Legend of the Coquí Frog

Join El Museo’s Idaliz Román Pérez for a reading of Kiki Kokí: The Enchanted Legend of the Coquí Frog, by author Ed Rodriguez, a story about a little Taíno indigenous boy who is too lazy to help his tribe prepare for the Moon Festival. To punish Kiki Kokí, the Moon Goddess turns him into a coquí (tree frog). Acompañen a Idaliz Román Pérez para el cuento de  Kiki Kokí: La Leyenda Encantada del Coquí, una historia sobre un pequeño niño taíno que es demasiado vago para ayudar a su tribu a prepararse para el Festival de la Luna. Para castigar a Kiki Kokí, la Diosa de la Luna lo convierte en un coquí .

Así de grandes son las ideas (2014 | 5.10min.) Sometime in the future an old man, equipped with the benefits of evolution, survived the extinction of all other living beings. It is a very lonely world for someone unable to die. ‘Así de grandes son las ideas’ is a collaboration between director/animator Quique Rivera Rivera and multiple Latin Grammy and Grammy Award winner René Pérez Joglar (Calle 13). En algún futuro lejano, un anciano, equipado con los beneficios de la evolución, sobrevivió la extinción de todos los demás seres vivos. Es un mundo muy solitario para alguien que no puede morir. ‘Así de grandes son las ideas’ es una colaboración entre el director / animador Quique Rivera Rivera y el múltiple ganador del Grammy Latino y Premio Grammy René Pérez Joglar (Calle 13). El delirio del pez león (2012 | 3.55min.) Inspired by the Lionfish plague, this surrealist, neo-noir film tells a story about greed and hierarchy in the Caribbean reef and shows delusions that fester below the sealine. Inspirada en la peste del pez león, esta película surrealista y neo-noir cuenta una historia sobre la codicia y la jerarquía en el arrecife del Caribe y muestra ilusiones que crecen debajo del sello marino. Menuda Urbe (2010 | 2.38min.) In this allegorical film, a surrealist magician seamlessly performs a coin trick but doesn’t seem to be fully in control of the ultimate trick under his sleeve. En una historia alegórica, un mago surrealista que hace ver fácil un complicado truco de magia con monedas, resulta no tener todo el control del último artificio bajo su manga,

Hurricane María rendered visible both the extremely fragile economic situation of Puerto Rico and the importance of alternative spaces, locales de auto-gestión, and socially engaged cultural and artistic initiatives present on the island before and after the passage of the natural disaster in September 2017. In an effort to honor and re/connect with those grassroots and arts initiatives before and beyond Hurricane María, join us for a special screening of Before and Beyond Relief by documentarist Rhett Lee Garcia, followed by a panel discussion with Rhett Lee García featured documentarist, Ed Morales, author, journalist, and member of the Unpayable Debt Project, Adrián ‘Viajero’ Román, visual artist, and Noemí Segarra of PISO Proyecto. Organized by anthropologist/ cultural producer, Libertad O. Guerra.
