SUPER SÁBADO: Día de los Muertos

Celebrate Mexico’s beloved 3,000 year-old tradition commemorating friends and relatives who have passed away with a procession led by Danza Azteca Chichimeca, a community altar by artist Tlisza Jaurique, an interactive educational workshop with members of The Villalobos Brothers, art-making workshop, face painting and a special concert by Radio Jarocho and Zenen Zeferino!

FREE ADMISSION.

In addition, we invite families with kids on the autism spectrum to join us for Super Sábado Early Birds. Families can comfortably explore El Museo before it opens to the public (11:00am – 12:00pm) through sensory-guided gallery visits and hands-on workshops. Recommended for kids ages 5 to 12 years old. Down These Mean Streets: Community and Place in Urban Photography

Explore the work of ten Latino photographers—Manuel Acevedo, Oscar Castillo, Frank Espada, Anthony Hernandez, Perla de Leon, Hiram Maristany, Ruben Ochoa, John Valadez, Winston Vargas, and Camilo José Vergara—who were driven to document and reflect America’s urban streets when notions of the inner city began to emerge. Organized by E. Carmen Ramos, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM)’s deputy chief curator and curator of Latino art. Explora el trabajo de diez fotógrafos Latinos: Manuel Acevedo, Oscar Castillo, Frank Espada, Anthony Hernández, Perla de León, Hiram Maristany, Rubén Ochoa, John Valadez, Winston Vargas y Camilo José Vergara-quienes fueron impulsado a documentar y reflexionar sobre las calles urbanas de Estados Unidos cuando comenzaron a surgir las nociones del “inner city”. La exposición está organizada por E. Carmen Ramos, curadora adjunta y curadora de arte latino del Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM).

Organized by SCAD Museum of Art and curated by Humberto Moro, SCAD Curator of Exhibitions, Liliana Porter: Other Situations is a non-linear survey of Porter’s work from 1973 to 2018, which explores the conflicting boundaries between reality and fiction, and the ways in which images are circulated and consumed. Organizada por SCAD Museum of Art y curada por Humberto Moro, Curador de Exposiciones de SCAD, la exposición es una encuesta no lineal del trabajo de Porter de 1973 a 2018, que explora los límites conflictivos entre la realidad y la ficción, y las formas en que las imágenes circulan y se consumen.

Picking Up the Pieces: An intimate view of life post-María

Sobrevivientes is an intimate look at life post-Hurricane María in Puerto Rico, and the unfortunate “new normal” of its people. Comprised of drawings, installations, and photographs that reflect unforgettable moments experienced by artist Adrián Viajero Román’s travels throughout the island, the installation creates portraits of individual lives profoundly touched by trauma and tragedy, and resilience. Sobrevivientes en una mirada intima a la vida en Puerto Rico después del paso de Huracán Maria, y la desafortunada nueva vida de su gente. Comprendido de dibujos, instalaciones, y fotografías que reflejan los inolvidable momentos vividos por el artista Adrian Viajero Roman durante sus viajes a través la isla, la instalación crea retratos de la vidas individuales profundamente afectada por trauma, tragedia, y resistencia.

Place of the Misty Sky is an ofrenda dedicated to the Goddess Itzpapalotl,  the “Obsidian Butterfly”. She is an important skeletal deity who appears in various Mesoamerican tribal cultures. She reigns over the Heaven ofTamoanchan, a heaven of deceased infants and the paradise where humans were created.

Join las calaveras callejeras as we kick off the Day of the Dead festivities with a musical procession from Central Park’s Dana Discovery Center (at 110th Street) to El Museo lead by Danza Azteca Chichimeca! Te invitamos a unirte a las calaveras callejeras, durante la procesión musical desde el Dana Discover Center en la calle 110 de Central Park hasta El Museo en el cual celebramos El Dia de los Muertos y sus tradiciones, guiada por los bailarines de Danza Azteca Chichimeca!
