SABOR! OUR ABUELAS LEGACY

Once a month, El Museo del Barrio opens its doors to everyone interested in exploring the vibrancy and diversity of Latino Culture. Through free concerts, exhibitions, gallery tours, art making workshops, walking tours, film screenings, and Spoken Word recitals, SUPER SABADO! showcases traditions, cultural expressions, and the latest in Latino art.

VOCES Y VISIONES: Four Decades through El Museo del Barrio's Permanent Collection

EXCLUSIVE - Get a preview of our new exhibition Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement. This is the first exhibition to focus on the work of Chicano artists since the mid-1990s with a strong conceptual dimension. It features some 100 works in all contemporary media, and includes video, performance, and installation art by 27 artists and collectives. El Museo del Barrio, the final venue for this event, is the only place to see it on the East Coast.

GALLERY TOURS

Artist Educators guide visitors through Voces y Visiones. A morning tour is offered at 11:00am in English, and two afternoon tours are offered in both English and in Spanish. Space is limited, and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Art Making Workshop
SABOR A MI!

Come to our Taller and create your own self-portrait, using foods and spices from abuelita's kitchen!

Photo Booth
SUPER SABADO PHOTO STATION
12:00noon – 4:00pm, The Courtyard
Capture your visit! Surround yourself by artist educator Kathleena Howie-García's artwork and take a fun picture with family and friends. Once you're back home, you can view and share your photos online at Flickr.

Storytelling
COLORIN COLORADO with Carmen Peláez
1:00pm – 2:00pm and 3:00pm – 4:00pm, El Café
Join actress and performer Carmen Peláez as she reads two entertaining stories about cooking with abuelita.

Film Screening
WHAT'S ON YOUR PLATE?
4:00pm – 5:30 pm, El Teatro
A witty and provocative documentary about food and politics that the whole family will enjoy, What's On Your Plate? follows two eleven year-old kids as they explore their place in the food chain. Stay for a Q&A with the director right after the screening! (Dir. Catherine Gund, USA, 2009, 76 min, Documentary, English).

Spoken Word Workshop
OH, SNAP! Young Powerful Voices at Work
4:30pm - 6:30pm, El Taller
Local arts collective The Peace Poets hosts a two-hour spoken word workshop for teens.

Food Making Activity
TASTY TORTILLAS TREATS
5:30pm - 6:30pm, El Taller
Join The Sylvia Center, a non-profit organization that focuses on children's nutrition, farm education, and wellness, for a yummy one-hour cooking workshop for families. Space is limited … arrive early!

Spoken Word
SPEAK UP! SPEAK OUT! Rainbow Racionality
6:30pm – 8:30pm, El Café
Caridad de la Luz "La Bruja" hosts an evening of "Rainbow Racionality"—race, hybridization, and the American Dream with poets Simply Rob, PattyDukes, and Aja Monet.
