Once a month, El Museo del Barrio opens its doors to everyone interested in exploring the vibrancy and diversity of Latino Culture. Through free concerts, exhibitions, gallery tours, art making workshops, walking tours, film screenings, and spoken word recitals, SUPER SABADO! showcases traditions, cultural expressions, and the latest in Latino art. What are you doing this summer? This month, Super Sábado invites you to use your passion, talent, and skills to help improve your community. Activities include family gallery tours, storytelling, and the opportunity to learn about ways to be more involved in your community.

Retro/Active: The Work of Rafael Ferrer
June 8 – August 22, 2010
This retrospective covers the breadth and depth of Rafael Ferrer’s influential production over the last 55 years—an artistic journey that converses with a rich range of 20th century art, but always reflects his intelligent, mischievous, and ultimately Caribbean perspective. Retro/Active is part of El Museo’s FOCOS series, highlighting the achievements of mature, under-recognized artists.

VOCES Y VISIONES: Four Decades through El Museo del Barrio’s Permanent Collection
On View through January 9, 2011
Explore the history of Latino art and El Museo in this exhibition housed in the Carmen Ana Unanue Galleries, featuring artwork and memorabilia from our Permanent Collection and archives. Works on view range from ancient Taíno artifacts to cutting-edge conceptual art.

FAMILY GALLERY TOURS

Artist Educators guide visitors through our two current exhibitions, providing insights and answering questions. A morning tour is offered at 11:00am in English, and two afternoon tours are offered in both English and in Spanish. Space is limited, and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Capture your visit taking a picture with family and friends. Once back home, you can view and share your photos online at Flickr.

Art Making Workshop/Taller de Arte
BOOKMARK MAKING

In collaboration with Children for Children, a non-profit organization that focuses on kids programming, El Museo invites guests to decorate their own bookmarks, which will then be donated to our local library.

Interactive Storytelling
COLORIN COLORADO… with the Story Pirates
1:00pm & 3:00pm, El Patio
Create-A-Show with Story Pirates, an arts and creative writing organization that promotes literacy as a vital part of early childhood education. Join our brand new improv format based entirely on suggestions from kids in the audience!

ENCUENTRO DE MUSICOS COLOMBIANOS

El Museo hosts the 7th Annual Encounter of Colombian Musicians in New York, featuring nearly twenty of New York's renowned Colombian musical ensembles and special guests from Colombia, and including programs for children:

Storytelling through music with Johanna Castañeda’s singing and cuatro playing "música llanera"—from the Colombian plains.

Martin Vejarano from La Cumbiamba eNeYe presents a workshop on gaita, the native flute from Colombia’s Caribbean region.

Yiyo Obregon presents the marimba de chonta, aka “piano of the Jungle,” an instrument from Colombia’s African-influenced Pacific coast region.
