RAÍCES THE ROOTS OF LATIN MUSIC IN NEW YORK CITY
1:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Raíces Latin Music Museum Gallery – 5th Floor
The history of Latin popular music known worldwide as Salsa began centuries ago in the islands of the Spanish Caribbean at a time of slavery and colonialism, and yet, it’s tied to 20th century New York and the growth of Latino communities in the city’s barrios. A cultural phenomenon, this dynamic exhibition explores the history and evolution of Salsa.
The Raíces Latin Music Museum is dedicated to the cultural, historic and artistic preservation of Latin music. The Museum’s more than 19,000 items pertain to the evolution and impact of the music, especially the genre commonly referred to as ‘salsa’ that evolved in New York City. Designated an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the collection forms the basis of programs ranging from research, exhibitions, and concerts to music instruction at Harbor Conservatory. Concurrent with programming, the Museum is working hard to catalogue, preserve and digitize the collection in order to allow for wider public access.
