SUPER SABADO! Día de los Muertos Celebration

Lift your spirits at this ever-popular Super Sábado as we celebrate Mexico's beloved 3,000 year-old tradition that commemorates friends and relatives who have passed away with a procession through Central Park, art-making, music, face painting, and more. Prepare for the big day by reading our activity guides on how to make paper marigolds and dress like "Catrina", a figure associated with this tradition.

PROCESSION
11:00am – 12:00pm, Dana Discovery Center in Central Park
Kick off the festivities with a colorful procession through Central Park, accompanied by musical guests Atl Tlachinolli and La Santa Cecilia. We begin inside Central Park at 110th Street, and ends at EI Museo.
Únete a nuestra procesión por Central Park acompañada por músicos invitados. Empezamos en Dana Discovery Center y terminamos en El Museo.

FACE PAINTING
12:00pm – 3:00pm, El Patio
Have your face painted with colorful strokes to match the fabulous Calaveras that surround you.
Ven a pintarte tu cara como las fabulosas calaveras a tu alrededor.

SAY QUESOOOOO!

Commemorate your Día de Los Muertos moment with family and friends at our photo booth.

ARTEXPLORERS

Learn about the legendary character, "La Catrina", and design your own modern day interpretation inspired by (S) Files artist Juan Hinojosa's installation on display in our lobby.
Entérate del personaje legendario, "La Catrina", y diseña tu propia interpretación moderna inspirada por la instalación de artista Juan Hinojosa ubicada en nuestro vestíbulo.

ARTMAKING

Create your own symbolic Día de los Muertos candle to light the way for our beloved muertos to come celebrate with us!
Celebra con nosotros, y crea tu propia vela simbólica de la luz que ilumina a nuestros queridos muertos.

Gather your family for this funny sketch about life and death featuring Melody Rose Vendrell.
Reúne a la familia para este gracioso episodio acerca de la vida y la muerte.

ALTAR PRESENTATION

(S) Files Artists Mösco and Marela Zacarias discuss their altar exploring the theme of Teen Violence. Altar supported by The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York.
Presentación de nuestro altar explorando la tema de violencia contra jóvenes.

FOOD TASTING

Try Pan de Muerto and champurrado for $3. First come, first served.

CONCERT
4:00pm - 5:30pm, El Teatro
Vamos a mover el esqueleto with a band that honors Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music. Our featured band, La Santa Cecilia, fuses up-tempo rhythms like Cumbia and Bossa Nova with the nostalgic Bolero and passionate Tango, blending in Afro-Cuban percussion, Rock and Jazz. Lead singer Marisoul’s haunting voice delivers a message of love, loss and heartbreak sure to leave you mesmerized.
Vamos a mover el esqueleto con una banda que honore a Santa Cecilia, patrona de la musica. Nuestra banda figurada, La Santa Cecilia, mezcla los ritmos de Cumbia y Bossa Nova con el nostálgico Bolero, apasionado Tango, percusión Afro-Cubano, Rock, y Jazz. La voz de Marisoul te entrega un mensaje de amor, pérdida, y desengaño que te dejará hipnotizado.

Write your thoughts and speak your mind as The Peace Poets lead this installment of our monthly spoken word workshop series for teens. (Ages 13-19)
Escribe y habla de tus pensamientos con The Peace Poets que guían nuestro taller mensual de poesía declamatoria para adolescentes. (Edades 13-19)

SPEAK UP!
7:00pm – 9:00pm, El Teatro
LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs hosts a night of multilingual verse, narrative, indigenous song and innovation in celebration of Day of the Dead. Special guests include Odi Gonzales, Mónica de la Torre, Soni Moreno with short films from the project "Son Siglos" by poet and filmmaker Marco Villalobos.
LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs presenta una noche de verso multilingüe , narrativo, canción indígena, e innovación en celebración del Dia de los Muertos. Invitados especiales incluyen a Odi Gonzales, Mónica de la Torre, y Soni Moreno con películas cortas de "Son Siglos", un proyecto de poeta y cineasta Marco Villalobos. (Edades 18+)
