Recent acquisitions of contemporary works by Dominican artists focused on New York-based practitioners, while including select artists from the island. This constellation―the first core collection of contemporary Dominican art in any U.S. museum―explores the idea of skin as a metaphor and membrane, mediating between one's inner being and outer experience. The tactility and sensuality of the mixed-media works echoes the theme, while addressing the experience of migration, perceptions of race, Dominican history and Dominican contributions to contemporary culture.
