El Museo's Annual Block Party! 2013
5th Avenue becomes your playground with art-making and dancing for all ages during the 35th annual Museum Mile Festival. Visit the galleries, make your own instruments and dance in the streets to the beats of DJ Charo Velecio. Performances include:
Batala NYC (6:30pm - 7:30pm): The women of BatalaNYC, an all-women drumming band, fill the street with the rhythms of samba reggae.
Antonio Ramos (6:30 - 7:00pm): Get a sneak preview of Antonio Ramos' new work, Antonio Ramos and the Gang Bangers in NEVERLAND, premiering in El Teatro on June 26; The performance starts in El Teatro and ends on 5th Avenue as Ramos takes his choreography from the stage to the street. Seats in the orchestra level will be open to families who want to see a portion of the performance and rejoin the festivities on the street without interrupting the performance at orchestra level.
The Museum Mile Festival began as initiative to grow museum audiences in the area, and to increase support for the arts during the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. Museum Mile was formed as a consortium by the museums that share the Fifth Avenue address and the first festival, held in June of 1978, was an instant success. Not only did it expose New Yorkers and NYC visitors to an incredible collection of New York’s artistic riches, it also brought together disparate New Yorkers. From El Barrio and the Upper East Side to the winding streets of the Village and the clustered neighborhoods of the outer-boroughs, people came to celebrate their shared pride in their city. The Museum Mile Festival promotes public awareness through increased visibility, accessibility and attendance at all the museums, and continues to bring many New Yorkers to upper Fifth Avenue for the first time.
