The Disappeared (Los Desaparecidos)
Curated by Laurel Reuter; organized by the North Dakota Museum of Art
Works by 13 contemporary artists of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezuela respond to the "desaparecidos"—the tens of thousands of persons who were illegally kidnapped, tortured, killed and "vanished" in South America by repressive dictatorships from the late-1950s to the 1980s. This term refers particularly to the "Dirty War" in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s. With funding from the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Lannan Foundation, and a full-color catalogue published by Charta, this project also travels through South America.
