The Saturday programming of the the Afro-Latin@s Now! Conference is inter-generational day highlighting the matters of Afro-Latinidad and expressions of identity, visibility and empowerment. Afro-Latin@s Now! is a three-day international conference that will gather scholars, community leaders and artists to advance a dialogue on issues of importance to Black Latin@s in the United States as well as foster positive relations between Latin@s, African Americans, and other peoples of color.

Workshop
AFRO-LATIN@ YOUTH AND IDENTITY
12:00pm - 1:45pm
Who is an afrolatin@? Learn about afrolatin@ identity in the US, Latin America and the Caribbean. This workshop will explore knowledge of Afro-Latin@ identity through a series of hands-on exercises using photographs, music and group work. In addition, it will discuss strategies to encourage students to continue this dialogue in their own communities.


Panel Discussion
WRITING AND TEACHING AFRO-LATIN@ PERSPECTIVES
2:00pm - 3:30pm
This panel consists of AfroLatin@ published writers of fiction, poetry, and prose who also are educators. We will discuss the responsibility that Black Latin@ writers and educators have and what we do and can do to raise awareness of our issues through youth literature and the schools. Table topics include: accurate portrayals of Afro-Latin@s' inner and outer struggles; the roadblocks and pathways to dignifying the cultural complexity of Afro-Latin@s in written-word and in our schools.


Open Mic
¡NOW Y PARA SIEMPRE! AFRO-LATIN@ OPEN MIC
4:00pm - 5:30pm
¡Now y Para Siempre! is an open mic session and an integral part of the Afro-Latin@s Now! conference. It brings together emcees, poets, musicians, singers, performers and artists from diverse artistic backgrounds in an open forum that allows for creative expression of ideas relating to Afro-Latinidad.
