New York Historical Society and El Museo del Barrio present Nueva York

NEW YORK, NY, April 20, 2010 – The New York Historical Society and El Museo del Barrio today announced details of their major upcoming collaboration, Nueva York—the first exhibition to explore how New York's long and deep involvement with Spain and Latin America has affected virtually every aspect of the city’s development, from commerce, manufacturing and transportation to communications, entertainment and the arts.

Retro/Active: The Work of Rafael Ferrer

New York, NY, April 23, 2010 – El Museo del Barrio is proud to announce that Retro/Active, The Work of Rafael Ferrer, the first solo exhibition in a museum to examine the breadth and depth of the artist's influential production over the last 55 years, will be on view June 8 - August 22, 2010. The travelling retrospective, curated by Deborah Cullen, Director of Curatorial Programs at El Museo del Barrio, includes approximately 100 works from the mid-1950s to the present in a vast variety of media including collage, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and mixed-media. It is part of El Museo's FOCOS series, which highlights the work of mature, under-recognized, and groundbreaking artists.

Retro/Activa: La Obra de Rafael Ferrer

In anticipation of our upcoming fall exhibition Nueva York (1613-1945), the first showcase to explore the long relationship between New York and the Spanish-speaking world, El Museo del Barrio and New-York Historical Society present “Los Mets Vets and Rising Stars,” an evening celebrating Latinos' extraordinary contribution to baseball, culture, and the New York community.

El Museo del Barrio Presents 2010 Summer Nights Program

New York, NY, May 26, 2010—El Museo del Barrio announced today that Summer Nights, its popular Latin music free concert series, will take place on eight consecutive Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00pm, June 10 - August 5, 2010. Summer Nights presents national and international artists and musicians appealing to audiences of all ages and interests, performing a mixture of rhythms, from Jazz, Electronic, and Folkloric Music, to a blend of Afro Cuban Rhythms.

July Super Sabado! Target Free Third Saturdays at El Museo

El Museo hits the street this July as it celebrates Super Sábado with a fun-filled block party for all ages. The central theme of this month is Health and Fitness, so grab your family and get ready to roll… kids should bring along their wheels-----bikes, scooters, skateboards and helmets for the ride.

May, 2010 – Super Sábado spreads throughout El Barrio! This month, our fun-filled, full day of free programs will take place at different locations in our neighborhood, before it comes back home to El Museo for late afternoon activities. Come join us for gardening at 103rd Street Community Garden, an art making workshop at the Graffiti Wall of Fame, a poetry performance at the Pedro Pietri mural, gallery tours at El Taller Boricua, delicious $1 lemonade at the East Harlem Café, and much more!

June Super Sabado! Target Free Third Saturdays at el Museo

What are you doing this summer? This month, Super Sábado invites you to use your passion, talent, and skills to help improve your community. Activities include family gallery tours, storytelling, and the opportunity to learn about ways to be more involved in your community.

EL MUSEO GALA HONORS PLACIDO DOMINGO AND TONY BECHARA

New York, NY, April 2010—El Museo del Barrio announced today that its annual Gala will be held on Thursday, May 27, at Cipriani 42nd Street, in New York City. This year's event will honor Plácido Domingo with a lifetime artistic achievement award. Tony Bechara, the museum's long-serving board chairman will be honored with a special leadership award. The master of ceremonies will be Barbara Walters. Renée and Alvaro Domingo with Yaz and Valentín Hernández are the gala chairs. The 2010 gala will also recognize the dedication and achievements of El Museo's outgoing executive director Julián Zugazagoitia.
