Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, On view June 12, 2012 - January 6, 2013

Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, organized by El Museo del Barrio in collaboration with the Queens Museum of Art and The Studio Museum in Harlem, features 550 works by 379 artists spanning four centuries. This multi-themed exhibition emphasized the relationship between the Caribbean and the US, and the artists from both locales who contribute to ongoing conversations about national and regional identity and belonging. The exhibition will present an extensive series of public programs, both organized by the three presenting museums and through collaborations with organizations around New York City. The programs will provide myriad opportunities to delve further into themes presented in the exhibition through films, concerts, dance performances, literary readings, and other events throughout the city.

El Museo's Gala Honors Narciso Rodriguez on Monday, May 17, 2012

New York, NY (March 21, 2012) – El Museo del Barrio announced today that celebrated fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez will be honored at its annual Gala, to be held on Thursday, May 17th in New York City at Cipriani 42nd Street. During this festive evening, the celebrated fashion visionary will be presented with an award for artistic achievement to honor his career and longtime patronage of the organization. A Cuban descendent and proud member of the Latin American community, Rodriguez’s work frequently draws inspiration from Latino art and culture. A three-time CFDA award winner, Rodriguez is considered one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America.” The annual fundraiser, now in its 19th year, will also pay tribute to philanthropist and El Museo trustee Yaz Hernández and corporate visionary Bacardi USA.

New York, NY, December 28, 2011—El Museo del Barrio will celebrate its 35th Annual Three Kings Day Parade on Friday, January 6, 2011, at 10:30am. The special anniversary of this timehonored holiday procession will include Honorary Kings, Madrinas, Padrinos, thousands of school children, live camels, gigantic hand-made puppets, and performers who will bring lively music and colorful dancing to the streets of El Barrio.

El Museo del Barrio Appoints New Director

August 2, 2011, New York – El Museo del Barrio announced today that it has appointed Margarita Aguilar to be its next director, beginning September 12, 2011. Aguilar, who served in the curatorial department at El Museo from 1998 to 2006, is currently Vice President and Senior Specialist in Latin American art at Christie's. Through her work at El Museo and Christie's, Aguilar has wide knowledge of historical and contemporary Latino and Latin American art and is a leading voice in the field. Aguilar was selected following an international search, and replaces Julian Zugazagoitia, who is now Director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Georgina M. Nichols, Director of Finance and Administration, has been serving as Interim Director of El Museo.

Nueva York, a 2 de agosto – El Museo del Barrio anunció hoy que ha nombrado a Margarita Aguilar como nueva directora a partir del 12 de septiembre de 2011. Aguilar, quien formó parte del departamento de curaduría de El Museo de 1998 a 2006, es actualmente Vicepresidenta y Especialista en Arte Latinoamericano en Christie’s. A través de su trabajo en El Museo y en Christie’s, Aguilar ha adquirido un amplio conocimiento del arte latino y latinoamericano contemporáneo e histórico, y es una de las especialistas más reconocidas en el área. Aguilar fue seleccionada por medio de una búsqueda a nivel nacional y reemplaza a Julián Zugazagoitia, quien es ahora Director del Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art en Kansas City, Missouri. Georgina M. Nichols, Directora de Finanzas y Administración, ha fungido como Directora Interina de El Museo.

El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files 2011 Takes to the Streets June 14, 2011 - January 8, 2012

New York, NY, March 30, 2011—El Museo del Barrio announced today that El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files 2011, its sixth biennial of the most innovative, cutting-edge art created by Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American artists currently working in the greater New York area, will take place June 14, 2011 - January 8, 2012. This year's edition focuses on the aesthetics of the street and spreads all over the city, showcasing a record 75 emerging artists in six different venues.

EL MUSEO'S GALA HONORS MARIO TESTINO ON THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2011

New York, NY, February 14, 2011—El Museo del Barrio announced today that its annual Gala, to be held on Thursday, May 26, at Cipriani 42nd Street, in New York City, will honor fashion photographer Mario Testino with a lifetime artistic achievement award celebrating his 30-year career. The glamorous fundraising evening benefitting New York’s leading Latino cultural institution will be chaired by Yaz and Valentín Hernández and Alex González and Raúl Martínez. This year’s Honorary Committee, still in formation, includes members Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Francisco Costa, Chace Crawford, Hugh Dancy, Oscar de la Renta, Linda Evangelista, Victoria Fernandez, Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, Carolina Herrera, Kate Hudson, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael Kors, Courtney Love, Sienna Miller, Narciso Rodriguez, Stella Tennant, and Donatella Versace.
