Volunteer and Intern Opportunities

El Museo del Barrio succeeds with the generous help of those who participate in our people-driven activities. With the help of volunteers, El Museo provides its services with a human touch. Support programs for a few hours and help make El Museo an experience you can be proud of. We also encourage personal development by offering enriching internships to promising students and youth. Please read below for volunteer and intern opportunities and apply today

School Programs Intern

Under the supervision of the School Partnerships Coordinator, the School Programs Intern will assist with coordination of school partnerships. Tasks will include updating school partnership database and assisting in outreach efforts, creating and compiling school partnership materials, including sample lesson plans related to exhibitions and cultural celebrations, and sampling curriculum plans for school partnerships and three-part programs. The School Programs Intern will also complete administrative tasks as assigned.

Director's Office Intern

Under the supervision of the Assistant to the Director, the Director’s Office Intern will interface with the public and museum staff to oversee Director’s communications, schedule,and correspondence, and will assist as a liaison for the Board of Trustees and the Director, and staff of El Museo. Tasks will include supporting front end and internal communications by telephone, email, and mail, organizing and setting up for meetings and assisting with preparation of support materials, coordinating special events generated by the Director’s office, and completing other duties as assigned.

Development Intern

The Development Intern will assist with various assets of the Department’s initiatives, including Corporate Fundraising, Space Rentals, and Membership. Responsibilities will include database reporting, market and competitor research, and other administrative tasks as assigned. The Development Intern will also be responsible for presenting the department with various ideas on how to solicit contacts and promote El Museo from Rentals, Corporate Membership, and Membership standpoints.

Cultural Celebrations Intern

Under the supervision of the Manager of Family Programs and Cultural Celebrations, the Cultural Celebrations Intern will assist with the research, preparation and execution of the museum’s cultural celebrations and family programs, and complete other administrative tasks as assigned.

Communications and Public Relations Intern

Under the supervision of the Communications and Public Relations Intern, the Communications and Public Relations Intern will assist in identifying target media outlets by compiling new niche media lists and updating/organizing pre-existent media contacts on a daily basis. S/he will help develop systems and schedules to advance the museum's internal and external communications. Her/his projects will also include processing and archiving media coverage; developing personal relationships with local, national, and international journalists; helping run press previews and host visiting journalists; assisting with content editing assignments; offering creative input in developing pitches; and pitching to press.

Website Intern

El Museo del Barrio seeks a fast learner to assist the Webmaster in producing and publishing web content. Under the supervision of the Webmaster, the Web Production Intern will be trained in the basics of Photoshop and HTML, along with web-based Content Management System (CMS) (specifically Drupal's open source CMS platform). Utilizing these tools, the Web Intern will learn to administer institutional information online. Tasks will include updating site with new programs and exhibitions information using customized "Drupal" CMS, resizing and optimizing images for the web using Photoshop "Elements" software, and using HTML and "TinyMCE" tool (web-based word processor) to format text within the CMS. In addition, he/she will complete a research project, and present results to the External Affairs Department (topic TDB).

Community Affairs Intern

Under the supervision of the Manager of Community and Government Affairs, the Community Affairs Intern will help expand the museum’s network of community connections. The Community Affairs Intern will research and identify community organizations serving diverse audiences in New York City, establish initial contacts with new potential partners, and help maintain current partnerships.

Educator Program Intern

Under the supervision of the School and Educator Programs Manager, the Educator Program Intern will assist with the program planning, training, and implementation of events over the summer and/or school year for educators in and around New York City. The Intern will have two projects: development and coordination of FY11 Professional Development workshops for teachers; and research and develop resource materials for teachers, including lesson plans, pre-and post activities, educator resource guides and develop art-making activities related to our collection and exhibitions and cultural program. In addition, the Educator Program Intern will provide program support and research such topics, such as: arts integration, museum education, inquiry-base methodology, community and school partnerships, civic engagement and the arts, youth development, and social justice.

Graphic Design Intern

Under the supervision of the Marketing Manager, the Graphic Design Intern will act as resident graphic designer for institutional needs including flyers, postcards, signage, and other collateral as necessary. S/he will work alongside Marketing Manager to conceive/produce collateral materials and streamline processes.
