ABOUT EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO
El Museo del Barrio, New York's leading Latino cultural institution, welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to discover the artistic and cultural landscape of the Caribbean and Latin America. The richness of Latino cultures is represented in El Museo's wide-ranging collections and exhibitions, complemented by performing arts events, cultural celebrations, and educational programs. A dynamic artistic, cultural, and community gathering place, El Museo is a center of cultural pride on New York's Museum Mile.
SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF JOB
The Artist Educator, SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS is responsible for the development and implementation of school partnerships and outreach programs. Each program will link the El Museo's mission and history, Permanent Collection, and exhibitions on view to the classroom curricula. The school partnership programs, Classroom Connections (CRCs), consist of five to ten-part sessions, which involve curriculum development, museum visits, hands-on workshops, and program assessment, in collaboration with the classroom teacher. The outreach programs are comprised of three-parts: a classroom visit to introduce a theme or topic; a museum to link the theme or topic to the resources of the museum, and a final classroom visit to reflect through a hands-on-workshop. Each three-part program is pre-formatted to introduce school groups to El Museo's history, its mission and permanent collection. All programs will address applicable subject areas using the New York State Learning Standards and the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts as guidelines.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Outreach Programs
• After initial discussion with the classroom teacher, incorporate relevant elements of classroom instruction into the three-part program.
• Conduct hands-on workshops related to each program.
Classroom Connections (CRCs)
• Prepare for and participate in all mandatory program meetings and training workshops regarding School Partnership Programs.
• Develop a program curriculum that integrates subjects and topics taught in the classroom based on discussions with the classroom teacher, the School Partnerships Coordinator, the Manager of School & Educator Programs. Each program will incorporate critical thought practices and awareness of social and cultural topics relevant to students.
• Complete a week-by-week curriculum outline prior to the first week of programming and have it approved by classroom teacher, School Partnerships Coordinator, and Manager of School & Educator Programs.
• Deliver program services as stated in your proposal and conducting activities consistent with the program goals and description as developed with the classroom teacher (please refer to your curriculum plan outline).
• In collaboration with the classroom teacher, the School Partnerships Coordinator, and the Manager of School & Educator Programs, define and implement a rubric or system of student evaluation.
• In collaboration with the classroom teacher, prepare a final project or presentation for your program. All final projects will be presented on Super Sábado!
• Submit a completed final program evaluation at the end of the program to the School Partnerships Coordinator.
General Administration
• Complete a weekly report/assessment and student attendance of each teaching session.
• Document the program through photographs and/or video, and photograph or collect examples of student work.
• Submit a completed final program evaluation at the end of the program to the School Partnerships Coordinator.
• Communicate immediately with the School Partnerships Coordinator and classroom teacher regarding late arrival or absences. Multiple absences could result in the termination of the program contact.
• Use school/museum facilities with care and consideration, i.e. clean classrooms or workspaces at the end of the day, tidy up rooms once finished working, etc.
• Arrive at the school at least one half-hour prior to the beginning of the session is mandatory.
• Communicate with the School Partnerships Coordinator regarding program needs, issues, developments, and any additional support needed to complete program goals.
• Assist the program coordinator with information and documentation necessary for completing program evaluations and reports as needed.
• Research materials needs and costs for the program and submitan order request to the School Partnerships Coordinator.
• Maintain weekly communication with the classroom teacher and the School Partnerships Coordinator throughout the duration of the program.
QUALIFICATIONS
• BA in Art History, Art Education, or BFA in Studio Art required.
• MA in Art/Museum Education or MFA in Studio Art preferred.
• Strong interest and experience teaching diverse students in a museum and/ or alternative learning environment; classroom teaching experience is a plus.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Understanding of object-based and inquiry- based teaching methodologies.
• Curriculum development experience required.
• Experience teaching studio arts and knowledge of a variety of art media, techniques and skills.
• Organized, creative and enthusiastic team player with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Background and interest in Latin American and Caribbean art and culture.
• Bilingual/ Spanish language proficiency preferred.
• Proven experience in Microsoft Office XP.
• Must be punctual.
