During the summer of 2014, educators and staff at El Museo del Barrio joined their counterparts at City and Country School for a two-part workshop for which they used wooden blocks to build; a pedagogical activity developed in the mid 1910s by Caroline Pratt, City and Country School’s Founding Director. In the fall, El Museo hosted an event where educators and community partners citywide were invited to rethink the concept of museums and cities as sites for educational experiences. El Museo as Classroom / City as School sought to kindle conversations between educators and community partners, while engaging all participants in a hands-on, mixed-media workshop centered on active learning.
This event paid homage to the founder of City and Country School, Caroline Pratt, and her groundbreaking contributions to progressive education; and to Raphael Montañez Ortíz, El Museo del Barrio’s founder and seminal artistic figure, and his emphasis on the pedagogical role of this cultural organization.
