El Museo’s Education and Public Programs Department is dedicated to providing
its diverse community with quality bilingual education programs. Through guided
tours, hands-on workshops, school partnerships, family programs, cultural
festivals, and adult public programs, El Museo reaches out to include people of all
ages, particularly our community’s youth. While offering an important resource for
the Latino and Latin American communities in New York City and the tri-state area,
El Museo’s programs are carefully designed to be accessible to all audiences. Using
the Museum’s collection and exhibitions as a foundation for teaching and learning,
El Museo’s education programs offer visitors multiple entry points through which to
explore works of art in-depth and in personally meaningful ways.

El Museo Del Barrio’s Renovation
During the 2008-2009 academic years, while the Museum’s galleries are under renovation, El Museo will offer K-12 school groups, universities, community organizations, and adult groups a new series of workshops designed to explore concepts and themes related to the Permanent Collection and cultural celebrations. All programs include an interactive presentation and discussion followed by a hands-on art activity facilitated
by a museum educator. Detailed information about the content of these programs is included below. Programs are available in English and Spanish and are offered on an on-going basis unless otherwise specified.
2008-2009 Program Themes
• *Updated* Pedro Meyer (In Focus)
Using photographs from Heresies by Pedro Meyer as the point of departure, this workshop will explore a variety of themes, including cultural traditions, spirituality, immigration and activism in Latin America. • Taíno Art & Culture
Travel back in time and discover the history, art, and culture of the Taíno people who lived in the Caribbean long before 1492! Learn about this civilization whose legacy lives on in our language, music, food, agricultural and spiritual practices.
• Bella Quisqueya (Beautiful Dominican Republic)
Celebrating the rich heritage and art of the Dominican Republic.From pre-Colombian Taino warriors to merengue and baseball, students will learn of the cultural contributions of Dominicans in their country and beyond. Also included are the works of contemporary Dominican artists in El Museo's Permanent Collection, sharing their views on immigration and the New York Latino experience in this workshop that celebrates the concept of heritage and the importance of preserving it.
• Majestad Negra (Black Majesty)
African Legacies in Latin America Starting in Black History Month (February), El Museo is offering a new workshop celebrating Latin America's African heritage. An historical overview includes the 800-year Moorish occupation of Spain prior to the colonization of Latin America, to the grim period of the West African slave trade and abolition. Participants will explore the triumphant African artistic, spiritual and cultural legacies in this workshop that affirms and celebrates Latin America's position within the African Diaspora.
• Around the Block from El Museo
While exploring East Harlem’s El Barrio, participants will learn how New York City neighborhoods have historically been shaped by the art, culture and traditions of the immigrants who have called them home. The program may include a walking tour (weather permitting).
• Voces y Visiones
Highlights from El Museo’s Permanent Collection: Experience Latin American and Latino art, history, and culture while exploring the treasures in El Museo’s collection. Learn about the Native American, African and Spanish elements of Latino heritage.
• Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Discover the Pre-Columbian roots and contemporary customs of Día de los Muertos. Explore the folk and graphic arts, music, and traditional foods associated with this festive Mexican cultural celebration which honors ancestors and the cycle of life.
• *Updated* From Borinquen to El Barrio
Celebrating Puerto Rican Heritage Explore El Museo’s collection and discover Puerto Rico’s rich art, music, and literary traditions. This program will touch on a variety of themes and topics including identity, spirituality, colonialism, migration, activism, and the Nuyorican experience. • Three Kings Workshop
Experience the holidays with Latino flavor! Learn about the traditions of this festive holiday observed in the Caribbean, Latin America, and in Latino communities throughout the United States. Participants will be introduced to the art, music and culinary traditions associated with this celebration.
