We at El Museo are filled with a sense of renewed energy and enthusiasm, as we craft our future. As the first museum of Latin American art in the United States, we bear a democratic responsibility to the nation: to represent a growing facet of our populace—a facet of American identity. We take special pride in being the premier American museum charged with the mission of preserving and promoting the rich diversity of Latin American art and culture.
This year we celebrate the 45th-anniversary of El Museo del Barrio, its ongoing commitment to its founding Puerto Rican community in East Harlem, and its expansive reach in representing Latin American culture in the city, the nation, and the continent.
We are shaping our future by crafting a five-year plan, one that allows us re-imagine the museum in bold new ways and undertaking new responsibilities, as commensurate with the changing times in which we live. We are experiencing nothing short of a renaissance at El Museo: an expansion in programming, staff and board, and an exploration of new places of presence for our programs. We are committed to enlivening the exhibition experience, reinvigorating educational programs, and expanding public programs.
The spirit of our reawakening is to by smart, daring, and fun! I encourage you to support El Museo in a variety of ways. Stop by our galleries, and explore our critically acclaimed exhibitions and artist in residence—in the galleries! Check our calendar for upcoming programs. Taste Latino cuisine at El Café. Shop at La Tienda and select from a wide-range of Latino-related merchandise, from exhibition catalogues and jewelry to housewares and posters.
And, of course, explore our neighborhood, which we affectionately call El Barrio. With more than a dozen murals throughout the area, featuring Latino cultural icons and those reflecting community life, El Barrio can be part of your El Museo journey by signing up for an Around the Block Tour. See our Group Visits page.
I encourage you to take part in our renaissance by becoming a member or giving a donation and enjoying the many benefits of being part of la familia!
This is only the beginning…
Un abrazo fuerte,
