This fall, with the support of Goya Foods, El Museo del Barrio and Mano a Mano, in collaboration with a variety of cultural and community-based organizations, present a month-long Día de los Muertos Citywide Celebration, featuring programs and altar installations throughout New York City. (Organizations participating in the altar contest are marked with an asterisk * below.) The NYC Altar Contest will culminate with a family day and award ceremony at El Museo del Barrio on Saturday, November 3 (details below).


CLOSING CELEBRATION AT El MUSEO DEL BARRIO

Explore ancient and contemporary Día de los Muertos customs through bilingual gallery talks and art workshops. Families create ofrendas (offerings) for our communal altar designed by artist Diego Medina.

Join us at El Museo for the award ceremony of the Día de los Muertos Citywide Celebration. The award ceremony will recognize all participants in the NYC Altar Contest, followed by a performance of Calpulli Mexican Dance in El Museo’s Teatro Heckscher.

ALTAR: THE BORDERS WE CROSSED, THE BORDERS THAT CROSSED US

The “The Borders We Crossed, the Borders That Crossed Us” altar will be a collaborative effort by artists of all mediums and community residents who may want to use traditional altar elements but also materials that could be used on the sidewalk to honor those who have crossed borders both in the literal sense but also figuratively. In collaboration with Carlitos Café y Galería, we will make use of the sidewalk to connect both places.

Carlitos will feature an altar “Los Amigos de Don Carlitos” honoring the ancestors of some of the patrons and artists that frequent Carlitos Café y Galería. The altar is a result of collaboration among artists, volunteers and friends who have performed, exhibited or made Carlitos Café y Galería a home away from home. This altar will also tell the story of the real Don Carlitos and provide a retrospective of the venue named after him.

CLOSING RECEPTION OF EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS WITH PULQUE, PAN, CAFÉ DE OLLA Y EL GRAN FANDANGO DEL BARRIO

This night will replicate the streets of Veracruz as Semilla brings zapateada y el son to Carlitos. Semilla is a collective of Mexican musicians and dancers living in New York who perform Son Jarocho, a musical blend of Indian, African, and Spanish sounds that originated in the Gulf Coast of México in the Sotavento region. As you enjoy the live music, try the delicious café de olla con pan o los dulces tamales de mole with an invigorating dose of our house pulque. DJ Nativo will play his usual beats of Mexican mix tapping the extraordinary diversity of traditional Mexican music—from Quebradita to Mariachi to Son Jarocho—fused with the sounds of Cuba, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

ALTAR: EL LLANTO DE LA RESISTENCIA

Mother Earth is crying out against wars that are destroying countries and cultures, wars against violence, substance abuse, alcoholism, HIV/Aids, those who have died crossing the border in the Rio Grande and the desert, and all of the indigenous leaders who have disappeared and been silenced. She is crying out for the young women in Cd. Juárez and Canada who have been tortured, abused, mutilated and murdered, victims of domestic violence, incest, rape and human trafficking. Mother Earth is crying because humans are destroying the forests, contaminating the waters and sucking her body dry.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION

The altar will be created outdoors at Bowling Green Park.
Workshops with Mexican artisans will include paper cutouts, paper flowers and sugar skulls (12:00 Noon – 4:00 pm). Candlelight procession will start in front of the American Indian Community House @ 11 Broadway (6:00 pm). Please bring candles. Program will open with Cetiliztli Nauhcampa, a Mexican dance group, who will welcome our muertitos and all who attend. We encourage you to bring offerings to place on the altar, including flowers, pictures, and mementos. Javier Dzul, Mayan dancer will perform and community members will recite Day of the Dead poetry. Amanecer Norteño will provide music for dancing. Tamales, champurrado and Day of the Dead bread will be served (7:30pm).

ALTAR: EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS (MEXICAN DAY OF THE DEAD)

A joyful Mexican tradition, the Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos), is a special occasion for Mexican families and the community to gather together to honor and remember our deceased loved ones. In this event, Mexican artist Irma Bohórquez-Geisler, with people from the Staten Island Mexican community, will create an ofrenda (altar) to exhibit at the George Cromwell Recreational Community Center. Members of the community will display traditional dishes such as pan de muerto (bread for our deceased), tamales, mole, and a variety of fruits for the visiting souls. Community participants are encouraged to bring and place photographs, special dishes, drinks and belongings of their deceased families and friends. A talk about the meaning of El Día de los Muertos and the offerings displayed at the altar will be given in English and Spanish.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS: CHILDREN’S PROGRAM

Artist Irma Bohórquez-Geisler will talk (Spanish and English) about the meaning of El Dia de los Muertos to children in the after school program at the Cromwell Community Center. Irma will bring traditional Mexican folk-art toys and skeletons from her private collection to share in the classroom. Subsequently, a hands-on workshop on traditional crafts will be taught. Children will be encouraged to draw and make a craft to honor and remember a deceased love one. The children will bring their art work and display it at the altar on Sunday, October 28, during the community event.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS: FAMILY WORKSHOP

Families will participate in a series of hands-on workshops on traditional crafts taught by artists Tamara Geisler, Irma Bohórquez-Geisler and Silvia Gutierrez. Learn how to make skeleton puppets, colorful paper decorations (papel picado), and marigold flowers. The Mariachi México Lindo band as well as Semilla, a group of Mexican musicians and dancers, will play traditional music. The group Semilla will perform sones jarochos, huastecos and son de tarima (son jarocho is a blend of Indian, African and Spanish sounds that originated in the Gulf Coast of Mexico). Participants will be encouraged to dance.

Created by artist Diego Medina, in collaboration with artist Chio Flores, this three-part altar installation represents the process of integration from one culture to another experienced as a result of migration, which is in essence, a figurative death. In addition, visitors may add offerings to a communal altar designed by Medina.

DAY OF THE DEAD: A CLOSER LOOK AT THE TRADITIONS
Thursday, November 1, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
El Día de los Muertos, celebrated annually in early November, combines the Spanish Catholic feast of All Soul’s Day with pre-Conquest indigenous rituals of death. Susan Aberth, Assistant Professor of Art History at Bard College, will present a visual survey of the altars, objects, and cemetery observances connected with this unique Mexican holiday. With the celebration’s traditional food as a point of departure, Mexican chef, Yolanda Basurto, Institute of Culinary Education, will explore traditional and contemporary traditions and will end the night with a cooking demonstration of the holiday’s most popular dishes. Susan Aberth’s presentation is made possible thanks to the support of the New York Council for the Humanities.

ALTAR: LAS VOCES DEL DESIERTO (2007)

This Altar for Día de Los Muertos, created by artist Paulina Perera-Riveroll, represents the 400 + women who have been murdered in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, over the past 15 years. These women are known as “Las Mujeres de Juarez” (Women of Juárez). The Altar honors them and celebrates their lives. It also serves as a reminder that these crimes are still happening and are still unresolved.

ALTAR: DESTINY WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

In memory of immigrants past and present, who have struggled to reach their destiny, a memory installation will be designed as in the Native American tradition as a circle from the four points of the Universe. Comprised of: Mexican incense (Copal), marigolds (Cempasúchil), fruits, photos of departed loved ones, and written expressions from family and friends. Artists, students, and community members will create a symbolic gesture of their love and remembrance.

DAY OF THE DEAD AT UNION SETTLEMENT

The free day-long celebration begins with the construction of the traditional altar, followed by handcrafts, workshops and, beginning at 6:00 pm, an evening celebration featuring traditional food, skits, poems, live music & dance and a candlelight vigil. This year’s event will include performances by Mariachi Real de México, the Mariachi Academy and a Mexican dance troupe.
