Coaybay: Site of the Afterlife An Installation by Jorge Crespo Curated by Fatima Bercht Contemporánea Gallery September 27, 1997 - January 11, 1998 A contemporary tribute to Taíno ancestory in a site-specific installation by Puerto Rican-born artist Jorge Crespo (b. 1963). Built of indigenous Caribbean materials including fiber, wood, gourds, leaves, and branches, Coaybay's deeply symbolic space will replicate the continous cycle of life, death, and regeneration in pre-Columbian cosmology. Crespo has enjoyed several one-person NY Gallery and alternate space shows. This participation in Contemporánea '97 will mark his first solo Manhattan Museum exhibition. This installation will compliment Taíno: Pre-Columbian Art and Culture from the Caribbean. |
