ABOUT EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO

El Museo del Barrio is the nation’s first Latin American museum of art. The richness of Latino cultures is represented in El Museo’s wide-ranging collections and exhibitions, complemented by performing arts events, cultural celebrations, and educational programs. A dynamic artistic, cultural, and community gathering space, El Museo is also a center of cultural pride on New York’s Museum Mile.

SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF JOB

Under the supervision of the Director of Government and Community Affairs, the Government & Community Affairs Manager will be responsible for managing and supporting El Museo’s efforts as they relate to government, advocacy, public funding, and community relations, in the effort to increase the institution’s ability to secure public funds for its operational, programmatic and capital needs. The Manager will develop and maintain contacts in city, state and federal government, and manage on-going reporting needs. In addition, the Manager will work with public agencies, consortia and alliances to help develop and implement cultural policies, respond to requests from elected and community officials on matters related to the museum and the arts, and research specific matters of concern to the museum as required.
The Manager will also serve as El Museo’s liaison to community and cultural organizations that serve a broad audience of adults, families, youth and children. The Manager will seek and facilitate opportunities through public programs, outreach, collaboration and partnership with community and cultural organizations, libraries, universities, senior centers, civic groups, and government entities, thereby providing El Museo with greater access to new and non-traditional museum audiences, in particular Latino audiences throughout the New York Metropolitan area. In addition, the Manager will work closely with all departments internally to help raise the museum’s profile, establish good will in the community and increase our constituents’ understanding and sense of ownership for El Museo’s government and community affairs efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and strengthen relationships with elected officials and respective staff at all levels of government.
  • Responsible for on-going reporting to various government agencies, such as The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; The NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the local Community Board.
  • Work with the Director of Government and Community Affairs to set annual fundraising goals, and establish strategies to reach those goals by targeting potential sources of new and renewable funding at all levels of government and, when possible, through international sources.
  • Work with Director of Government and Community Affairs to develop innovative methods of community engagement and establish strategies on ways to increase El Museo’s presence in the community in an impactful and meaningful way.
  • Develop key institutional communication materials used for information sharing, including ‘one-pagers’ on services offered, with relevant statistical information, i.e., attendance numbers, census data, arts specific data, which will serve to further solidify our advocacy efforts.
  • Manage all aspects of El Museo’s external presence at festivals, fairs and panels, expanding our presence throughout the five boroughs.
  • Host community meetings and manage community events on-site. Some evening and weekend meetings and events must be attended.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of all relevant government and community affairs contacts.
  • Supervise departmental interns and volunteers as appropriate, and work with consultants and lobbyists as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree, with 3 years of professional experience in government and community affairs, grassroots organizing, fundraising or related field.
  • Experience working with government agencies and officials.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, messaging, and oral communication skills to reach a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under deadline pressures while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to network and work productively with diverse constituencies and experience in reaching local community audiences.
  • Commitment to El Museo’s mission and the ability to communicate that mission effectively and enthusiastically with a demonstrated interest in Latino/Latin American art and culture.
  • Knowledgeable about the community of East Harlem, in addition to working knowledge of NYC ethnic and cultural communities and public funding system is preferred.
  • Computer literacy required, as well as proficient with MSOffice (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Fully bilingual (Spanish/English) both written and oral.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary.
