El Museo del Barrio is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1969 to preserve and present the art and culture of Puerto Ricans and all Latin Americans in the United States. El Museo del Barrio's exhibitions present a broad range of aesthetic concerns. Exhibitions that advance scholarship on Puerto Rican, Latino and Latin American art and culture, and insert these artistic heritages within art historical or contemporary discourse, are highlighted.

El Museo del Barrio is interested in reviewing work by individuals on an on-going basis. We appreciate being made aware of as many artists as possible. Artists are invited to submit materials for curatorial review, and then inclusion in the Artists' Archive. The curatorial office will acknowledge review of work by mail, once reviewed. Materials must be sent by mail or dropped off at El Museo's Receptionist's desk.

We appreciate your understanding that El Museo del Barrio receives a tremendous amount of material from around the world each day, and it is impossible for Curators to meet personally with all artists. Due to the tremendous volume of material submitted, artists should not request appointments. Be sure to include all contact information so that El Museo can contact artists as required.

The Artists' Archive is a fundamental research tool of the Curatorial office, and is also open to the public by appointment. Inclusion in this Archive is essential for consideration for potential future projects both at El Museo del Barrio and other venues. We are frequently asked for recommendations and suggestions. Artists can add to their files at any time and are encouraged to do so.

El Museo del Barrio cannot be held responsible for original materials-please only submit duplicates to the attention of The Curatorial Department. All submitted materials become the property of El Museo del Barrio Artist's Archives. We recommend including the following, as applicable:

  1. A statement about your work;
  2. A sheet of slides, fully labeled (or color Xeroxes, or other forms, as required);
  3. A resume;
  4. Catalogs, clippings, or invitations (as applicable);
  5. VHS tapes or CD Roms, may be submitted, if relevant. However, please bear in mind these forms may be more difficult for outside researchers to view, due to a lack of technical resources.

El Museo is currently rotating its temporary exhibitions two times each year, while planning three to five years into the future.

Submitted materials are generally reviewed two times per year. (rev. 6/28/03)
