Three Kings' Day Parade
On Friday, January 6, 2006 , El Museo del Barrio offers the 29thAnnual Three Kings’ Day Parade and Theatre Program to local residents and all Three Kingsof New York City . This festive, cultural holiday is observed in Puerto Rico , the greater Caribbean , Latin America , and throughout the United States . El Museo’s dynamic parade, led by the Three Kings, winds through the streets of El Barrio and includes lively music, colorful costumes, as well as an educational theatre program for students following the parade. The theatre performance will include an informative demonstration of the cuatro and aguinaldos (carols), as well as the origin of the Three Kings’ Day celebration.

If you are interested in only observing the parade, you do not need to register. For information on the parade route, please see the map below. Students, organizations, and families interested in marching in the parade MUST register. In order to qualify for the theater program, you must march in the parade.

Students, organizations, and participants marching in the parade may bring banners and/ or artwork to represent their respective school or organization. Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes reflecting the Three King’s story (Example: the Three Kings, shepherds, angels, camels, sheep, etc.) Participating school groups and organizations may bring banners and/or artwork to represent their respective school or organization in the parade.

You will be sent package of information about the January 6th program, educational materials, Photography Waiver Form, Confirmation Form, color admission ticket (for either Parade, Parade & Theatre Program, or Parade and Theatre Waiting List).

  • REGISTRATION: On-site check-in & registration for the Three King’s Day Parade (Fri. January 6 th) begins promptly at 8:30-9:30AM sharp on 5th Avenue between 105th Street & 104th Street.
  • At registration, you must present this Confirmation Form, your Photography Waiver, AND your colored ticket. A number indicating your position in the parade line-up will be assigned to your group at that time. Only teachers/ group leaders will be allowed in the area to register their group. (Please have this form available along with your colored ticket)
  • PARKING & BUSES: Please review the map provided for the parade layout. Teachers are responsible for making arrangements with bus drivers regarding the drop them off and pick up location. (Note: Fifth Avenue street parking will NOT be available between 104th & 105th streets or on 106th Street between Fifth Avenue & Park Avenue.) Buses WILL be allowed to park in the following public parking locations: on 105th Street , South side of 104th Street , on Madison Avenue, on Lexington Avenue . This is based on parking availability (first come, first serve). After registration, groups may use their buses, if available, to wait prior to lining up for the parade which begins around 9:20 am .
  • PARADE LINE UP: Parade line up begins at 9:20am . Line up is subject to change at the discretion of El Museo and security personnel. El Museo has no holding facilities for groups inside. Registered groups may obtain refreshments at the designated locations disclosed (To Be Announced). Groups must wait on sidewalks of 106th Street between Fifth Avenue & Madison Avenue for parade line up.
  • WEATHER: Due to the nature of this outdoor event, all participants must be dressed for winter weather. In the event of severe inclement weather, the parade route will be shortened. Volunteers will assist your group.
  • MORNING REFRESHMENTS & LUNCH: ONLY groups registered who are marching in the parade will receive refreshments prior to the parade. As for student lunches, there are no lunch facilities at El Museo. All groups should plan to leave their lunches on their buses and eat lunch after the event. There are local delies and restaurants in the immediate vicinity that serve sandwiches, soups, and some hot meals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

All groups must register at 1230 Fifth Avenue between 104th and 105th Street, between 8:30am-9:30am .
Parade line up begins PROMPTLY at 9:30 am .
Parade starts at 10am and runs until approximately 11:30 am .
Parade duration: approximately 1½ hours.
El Museo del Barrio staff will direct lineup.
Theater program (for pre-registered groups only): 45 minutes.
Performance: live music and dance.
EVERYONE joining the theater program MUST MARCH IN THE PARADE.

The Three Kings Day Parade starts at 10am from the corner of 106th Street between Fifth Ave and Madison. (Please see map below for details) Please be advised that the parade route may be re-routed on the day of the parade in the event of inclement weather.

FAMILY CELEBRATION OF POPULAR TRADITIONS FROM MEXICO

At El Museo del Barrio, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

This special collaboration between The Metropolitan Museum of Art and El Museo del Barrio celebrates the ancient Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. Beginning at 11 a.m. at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, families are invited to join educator-led gallery talks of the Pre-Columbian collection, view films, and experience a live performance with Mexico Beyond Mariachi.

Then at 1 p.m., hop on a shuttle bus to El Museo del Barrio to continue festivities and learn more about the traditions of this ancient feast day. At El Museo, honor your ancestors and celebrate the cycle of life and death through gallery talks by participating artists in El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files/ The Selected Files.  Join artist educator-led art activities, enjoy music and dance performances, taste traditional foods, and add to our communal altar.
